Abstract
The aim of this paper is to draw a comparative analysis of African traditional and Western Christian perspectives on divorce and remarriage, emphasizing the deep cultural, moral, and theological contrasts that shape family values and social order. It explores how African societies, rooted in communal living and ancestral continuity, have long regarded marriage as a social and spiritual institution centered on procreation, family cohesion, and the preservation of lineage. In contrast, Western Christian thought—shaped by biblical doctrine and ecclesiastical authority—presents marriage as a sacred, lifelong covenant grounded in companionship, love, and divine purpose. The paper traces how colonialism, missionary expansion, and globalization have brought these two belief systems into dialogue and at times into conflict, creating moral and identity dilemmas for African Christians navigating between tradition and imported religious norms. Using historical and descriptive methods, the study draws from scriptural texts, oral traditions, and scholarly works to examine the moral, social, and theological implications of divorce and remarriage in both worldviews. It also discusses how education, urbanization, women’s empowerment, and modern socio-economic pressures have transformed perceptions of marriage across Africa. The findings reveal that while Western Christianity maintains a stricter stance on divorce and remarriage, African traditional systems offer more pragmatic and restorative approaches aimed at sustaining harmony within the family and community. The paper concludes by advocating for a culturally sensitive Christian ethics that integrates compassion, justice, and contextual understanding in addressing marital challenges in African societies.
